AtasCosita Land of myth, legend and chaos. 2016-05-04T01:15:55-06:00 https://atascosita.net/feed.php?f=41 2016-05-04T01:15:55-06:00 2016-05-04T01:15:55-06:00 https://atascosita.net/viewtopic.php?t=268&p=472#p472 <![CDATA[History / Storyline Archive • Finding A New Way]]>
Slowly, though, times do change and the word of new, false Gods came to the land and with them came trickery. The Primes were pushed aside, furres choosing the flash of the new over the 'same' of the old.

With sadness in their hearts the Primes of Light turned their backs on Alcroft, leaving them to the mercy of the Dark.

They laughed at the lost children of Alcroft and devised a punishment as proper as could be. They would leave that land to their own devices. Let them find solace in the new, false Gods they were worshipping. Let them gain their strength from those new, false Gods. With a humour that only the Primes of darkness could muster they stripped Alcroft of magic, plunging the residents of that land into chaos. Were that not enough, the Lord of Broken Things, Dark Prime of Destruction, Greydark, descended beneath the waves and with an unhinged grin broke apart the rock, setting the land adrift.

Lost and without aid, Alcroft plunged into chaos. Kingdoms warred, furres starved, and their new Gods were nowhere to be found.

Generations passed and slowly the land settled into a new rythm, the people coming to terms with a new way of life. Slowly they began to understand their home and find new ways to tap into the life force that still remained. By dribs and drabs a new magic was discovered and it flourished.

Some were born with that ability to tap into the life force, others had to learn it through study and meditation, but natural or discovered.. magic users became as common as nonmagic users. Schools were created and soon the new Masters were able to combine their strength and create web around their large island. Though it may never again be rooted in place the land shifts and changes, landbridges appearing and disappearing, allowing travellers safe passage across when the mass is close enough to the mainlands.

With the discovery of their new magic the people of Alcroft began to look back at their history and slowly they realized their folly. Temples to the Primes were once again raised, drawing the attention of those they were devoted to.

The land, once lost and chaotic, was again found, and peace had returned, a different magic to be tapped into when a newcommer steps onto their soil.

We are going through and updating the classes and adding races to our system!

This means a couple of things!

1) Some classes are being removed! If you have a character in one of these classes I will get with you, personally, and we'll figure out how to best reclass your character.

2) Removed classes are becoming Races! You are now going to be able to be a Dragon Bard.... or a Demon Champion! Races will adjust your characters BASE stats! Unfortunately this means everyone will have to choose a race! I will try to reach out to everyone, in game or via the forums, to remind you to choose your race!

Please bare with us as we make these changes!

Step 1: Select your character class from one of these two pages!
This is by far the most important step. Please understand that your class determines what feats/abilities are available to you as you level. There are no custom abilities in Atas. We have a lot of classes to give you a wide variety but understand there is no multiclassing and no substitution.

Vampire, Scion, Phoenix, Gryphon, Feral, Fae, Druid, Dragon, Demon, Citizen, or Were classes are here -

Bard, Champion, Cleric, Fighter, Jack, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Shaman, Sorcerer, and Wizard can be found here -

Open those two links in a new tab, look through them and select one that fits your style. Keep that open in a new tab.

Step 2: Open the skills page in a new tab! There are 10 total, you get to select up to 5 for your character. You can choose less, but you cannot select more later. This is set in stone, choose wisely.

Step 3: Open the character template in a new tab!

Step 4: Go to the forum page for the character class of your choice, and create a new topic

Step 5: Now we put it all together. Paste the contents of the character template from step 4 into your new post. Fill in your maximum five skills from the list in step 2. All the stats (Health, Stamina, Magic) come from the class sheet in step 1.

Step 6: The creative part!
Character background, pictures, description, this all gets filled in to your hearts desire. We all love to read a well written character description. Want to write a full length novel, a whole story instead of just a description? We have a special spot of honor for just such players, the character stories page right on the front of the forums

Chatengo and Nareetha
Sped on their way,
'Neath the eyes of Tallus
Silent were they.

Towards the depths,
Of Telcodar's dark caves,
Met up with Lokira,
No greetings they gave.

Erigon sat, drinking his mead,
While resting on a rock, Mirmoggin did feed.
Dyarr and Peristane were throwing the bones,
As Dossifer stood, away and alone.

Suffrith waited, making eyes at Greydark,
While Taglinn Tigh motioned the meeting to start.

The floor gave way,
To the Lady of Pain.
A cat with no fur, Lokira her name.

She begged for some slaves
From Peristane's great stash.
To treat them so kindly,
To her flail and her lash.

He rolled his one eye and fanned his one wing,
And told her to sit for he'd give not one thing.

The gryphon then turned and looked at Mirmoggin,
Who was crunching greedily on some poor dead furre's noggin.

The dark Prime of Slavery then narrowed his eye,
With a grunt of disgust, turned his head to the sky.
"My slaves have gone missing," he said through clenched teeth.
"My slaves are for working, not some Primes Roast Beast"

Suffrith perked up at the mention of eating,
Which got her from Greydark a harsh verbal beating.
"Quit gawking and gorging you great ugly creature"
"Your retreating backside your most nicest of features."

"The light primes are striving to get us all killed"
Dyarr said loudly, it's voice filled with thrill.
Telcodar just chuckled and paid it no heed,
As the dark Prime of Lies, Dyarr was perfect indeed

Nareetha sat mournfully, all garbed in white
A strip of cloth gagging her, tied awfully tight.
A low keening wail can be heard from her kind,
So primes stop up her mouth to keep balance in mind.

The meeting proceeded and each prime did speak
They called each other childish, silly and weak.
And just as a war was about to break out
The leader of all proceeded to shout.

Slowly Taglinn Tigh raised all four of his arms
"Brothers and sisters do each other no harm.
This night has proceeded as nights past have done,
And we must depart as morning has come.
When four cycles of moon in the night sky have passed,
In the caves of Telcodar we'll gather at last.
To tell of our anger, our hate and our pain,
My siblings, I leave you, till we meet again."

The horse snorted and shifted its weight from side to side, anxious to be on its way. Its hot breath misted in the winter air, and tiny, sparkling tendrils of ice formed on its whiskers. The ground was covered with a light powdering of snow, shimmering in the newborn sunlight across the valley, and across the cliff upon which the horse and rider stood. The heavily cloaked figure stirred in the saddle, the leather squeaking. At the movement there was a telltale chink of steel armor beneath. Quick, intense eyes peered out from the hood, and a wisp of breath condensed in the frigid air, then dissipated.

Although the rider spoke no word, nor urged with its body, the steed began clopping along the icy stones, across the cliff and away from the valley. The rider's task was at hand.

***

It had been 7 cycles of the moon since the pretender had ascended the throne. The weakling boy and his devious vizier were in power. They had squeezed the life from the dying king and assumed his place, to the dread of a few lonely patriots. The withered, dying king, knowing death was clawing at his bed linens, sent his few trusted followers and knights away. He sent them on counterfeit quests and fraudulent missions to have them gone when he faced the traitors. In his arrogance, or perhaps in fevered disillusionment, he concluded that by divine right of his kingship he would defeat any wrongdoers - even in his decaying state.

The king had been wrong, and now his putrefying corpse was secreted away in the catacombs 'neath the chapel.

Atas'Cosita was in turmoil. The populace had not in anyway mourned the death of their unmerciful and corrupted liege, but the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t. Ubreckt had been a poor king, but he had been predictable at least. His many slovenly wives: crusty, haughty old women and vindictive, nasty young tarts had raised him an army of equally loathsome heirs. Unfortunately, depending on whom you asked, those young heirs had killed themselves off in a gouging, scraping battle to assume the throne after Ubreckt. Many had been assassinated, some had dueled and died, some had suicided, and more yet had died of bawdy diseases too grisly to mention.

With no heirs to fill the throne, the lords had scrambled to place themselves as ruler of Atas'Cosita. The royal vizier, Menubrius, plotted against the withering king and placed himself in a position to snatch the monarchy from Ubreckt. Menubrius was a greasy, manipulative weasel and had selected the most pliant, most gullible, and most dim-witted young lord he could find. Plucked from his blubbery mother's clammy embrace, and slammed into kingship, Frederigar couldn't have been happier. He slept, gorged, and lusted his days away and cared not for the matters of state. Menubrius had assured the play-king that everything was being taken care of. And so it was.

Now, taxes were too high to pay - even for the rich aristocracy. There was no business or trade being conducted as Menubrius had slammed a wall up around the kingdom that was kept heavily guarded. He filled the ranks of the king's army with greedy mercenaries, and banished all forms of government, save the monarchy. He had slain all of the king's personal guard, and had slammed the gates to any that had been loyal to the empire. Citizens were starving, and riots had ensued. Menubrius thoroughly enjoyed squashing rioters and leaving their tortured, ruined bodies in the streets to serve as a warning to other would-be challengers of his laws.

***

Heroh Ti'Mouse rode away from Atas'Cosita with little more than a tentative plan in the back of her mind. She squinted at the glare of the morning sun off the frost-covered ground, and pulled her cowl low over her head. She was chasing a rumor, a whispered story of an indiscretion.

Heroh was an idealist, and guarded the throne with her life. She had not liked Ubreckt, but he had been king, and as the King's Guard she had sworn to protect him. She had faithfully done Ubreckt's bidding, and gone of on what had been a false mission, and upon her return had found chaos. Now, she knew that as she had failed the king of Atas'Cosita, she must do what she could to right that. She knew the only way to rid the kingdom of the play-king and his puppeteer was to come up with a blood heir.

As the horse moved swiftly through the woods, snapping its tail in the cold air, Heroh mused. Long before she had become one of the King's Guards, there was a disturbance in the castle that sent hushed rumors and anxious giggles throughout the kingdom. Such a tale had lasted, and been joked about amongst the king's men for some time. As rumor had it, a young, female servant employed in the castle had been swiftly discharged from service after the king had taken a fancy to her. The kings wives had been especially harsh in their ejection of the poor girl, their time in the kings favor having waned. She had been ushered out the back tunnel of the castle, and had fled the hurled rocks the king's many wives were entitled to pummel her with. For, no one is allowed to harm the king, especially claw his face and gouge his cheek - even if his majesty is forcing himself upon you.

Word is that the poor scorned woman had given birth to a bastard child, but no one could support this claim.

Heroh snapped the reins, dug her heels into the horse's lean flank and leaned into the wind. She had an heir to locate.

***

Heroh's quest took her far and away, following rumors and her hunches. She had been turned away from many doors, and met with hostile stares as she made her way through the many small hamlets and villages. Few had aided her, as the populace had their own problems to deal with. Most wouldn't welcome a walking symbol of the ruthless monarchy - a knight.

It had been one cycle of the moon before she had stumbled upon some encouraging news. An old crone who had worked in the castle years earlier was familiar with the story. After much cackling and gesticulating, the crone related how the whoreling who had seduced the chaste and benevolent king had gone into hiding two towns from there.

Urgency gripped Heroh as she spurred her steed faster and faster to Capus`Cayzing.

She wandered the dingy, ramshackle streets of Capus`Cayzing, asking whomever she came upon if they knew a woman who had worked in the castle. Most leads ended up dead ends save one. There was a family that lived north, deep in the forests, and was totally reclusive. Rumor had it that they came from Atas`Cosita 19 years ago. Heroh knew the time frame to be correct, so she set out on foot, leaving her horse in the stables.

She walked northward for hours through the woods bordering Capus`Cayzing. As dusk neared she happened upon a small shack, hardly big enough for even a single person. A line was stretched from one tree to another, damp laundry hanging from it. A scattering of chickens and goats walked about the shack, scrounging for food. A plume of smoke rose from the derelict chimney. A man who was as equally dingy as the cabin greeted her. She explained herself, and her quest. Without saying a word the man led her into the house and there she saw a feline femme sitting at a rickety table.

This was the very woman she had searched for! Cast from the palace, she had retreated to Capus`Cayzing. She had borne the child deep in the woods, in the very shack Heroh had found. The man was a hunter, taken in by the beauty of the woman, he stayed with her and lovingly served as father to the king's bastard child.

The weary couple insisted Heroh stay for the night. They offered up the single room's only bed, which was shabby, but clean. Heroh graciously declined and slept on the wooden floor. When the sun finally crested the trees in the morning she had long since taken her leave. The woman was whom Heroh had been searching for, but there was no child within the house. The parents had told Heroh they had received word from the girl only two weeks past. Filled with a curiosity of the world outside of their tiny shack, the girl of 19 had left her tiny wooden castle and ventured off into the world. She had traveled to the small island of Allegria. She had befriended, and then fell in love with a furre there. They quickly married. With the name Allegria whispering in her mind, she stepped out of the forest and looked with horror upon the village of Capus`Cayzing. It was devastated! Heroh looked upon the torched houses and the beaten citizens. The few furres that remained alive were huddled near the town well clinging to each other, shaking and sobbing.

Menubrius, the play king's adviser, had seen to it that Heroh was followed. He, along with a small platoon of his hired mercenaries, kept pace just behind Heroh. They razed the village after finding that she had passed through, asking about an heiress.

She was a knight of the throne, and in trying to find the bastard child, was betraying that very throne she had sworn to protect. She walked through the town, towards the tent baring the kings' standard. She gripped her sword and ground her teeth in fury. Menubrius was a fool! He did not expect her to boldly confront him and therefore left his canvas tent unguarded. The mercenaries were out looting the paltry spoils of the ravaged town. As she tossed the flap aside and entered, the greasy weasel glanced at her in petulance and smiled. With eyes of fire, she closed the distance between them. Quickly and ruthlessly Heroh dispatched of the adviser, doing what she felt was best for the throne and the kingdom. She left him slouched at his table, a deathly red grin across his neck that pumped the blood of the already dead royal vizier.

She slipped from the town silently, unheard and unseen. She mounted her horse and sped off towards the ocean, towards the boats that would take her to Allegria Island. Two days later she set her feet down upon Allegrian soils. It took her no time at all to locate the girl. Not many furres possessed the name Zaboo. A day of searching passed before Heroh found her. Zaboo was walking along the shores staring out at the sea. Her large, tufted ears swiveled, her fur was the same dark grey as her mother's. Heroh saw the dead king in her sea green hair and bright sapphire eyes.

They had a short conversation. Zaboo's husband had disappeared and the young femme fretted. Heroh finally told Zaboo why she had come for her. They left word with a friend for Zaboo's husband and together they left for Atas`Cosita. Zaboo was unsure if she wanted this or not, but the knight Heroh made it plain enough to understand - the people needed a leader, and she was the rightful heiress to the throne. She had been upset when she found that the furre she thought was her father had not been, but she understood why the secret had been kept from her.

The return to Atas`Cosita was uneventful. Heroh explained to Zaboo most of what had been happening and Zaboo expressed to the knight her reservations about leading the people. Heroh tried to reassure the girl the best she could, but indeed it would prove to be a daunting task.

The castle was most unimpressive. It was a two-story building of dark red brick. The façade was usually tastefully plain, but the play king had made a mockery of the respectable structure by hanging gaudy trimmings and tasteless decoration outside and in. Zaboo stayed in the main hall while Heroh strode to the audience chamber. In the throne slumped Frederigar. He had several grungy, scantily clad servant girls attending him. They laughed anxiously at his paltry, bawdy jokes.

Heroh marched boldly up to him and sneered. The time of the play king was at an end. She gave him his ultimatum: stay on the throne and die like Menubrius, or flee Atas`Cosita with his life and remain exiled. With no advisor to protect him, Frederigar ran for his very life.

***

And thus Zaboo was named Queen of Atas`Cosita, through the boldness of her Captain of the Royal Guard, Heroh. Zaboo rules benevolently, wisely and mercifully. A council attends her, and she hears their thoughts and ideas. Her husband has returned to her once again, and the citizens are filled with a renewed hope. Atas`Cosita has entered a time of peace and prosperity.

We hope…

I can see you now in my mind, even as I pen this confession to you, at the age of 15, as you struggle to gain acceptance into the Royal Guard - an impossible task, you being so very young, and of course, a girl.

All the years you have been with me I have never mentioned your family's past to you. I feel it's time to let you know of your heritage, and how you may use this birthright to gain admittance into a most honored and tight knit garrison.

I must write quickly, for Ubreckt seeks to silence me for what I know.

Your mother was a nobleman's daughter. This you must remember above all else, for your struggle hinges on this realization. Lady Nadiah Ti'Mouse was a most gentle and caring person, who would have done anything for her country. Anything, including accepting an arranged marriage as her fate. Though her heart loved another, she was honor-bound to marry the Commander of the Royal Guard. The Commander was Titian, a merciless and arrogant rodent, who ruled efficiently through brutality and was in King Ubreckt's favor. Cut from the same cloth, the two each had a paw in your mother's demise.

Ubreckt, as foul a man as I have ever known, had promised the rodent many thousand ares of land and a position as King for Titian's male heir in the future. This was in exchange for Titian's continuing brutal justice.

It was not long after that Lady Nadiah was with child. When she bore you, a girl, Titian was outraged. His vicious verbal attacks were heard 'round the manor. It wasn't a fortnight later that Nadia was dead, strangled in her bed.

The family wailed in grief and demanded justice against the unknown assailant. They sought out Menubrius, the Royal Viseur, and he devined that Nadiah had been slain by her own husband's paw. King Ubreckt had silently applauded Titian's bold move, yet he was forced to banish his favored Commander. Banishment was a merciful punishment, as the influential Ti'Mouse clan sought death for Titian.

You may wonder, my Heroh, how you came to be with me, a simple guard of the Court. Nadiah loved me with all her heart, and I returned that love. I vowed on her grave to care for her child, OUR child.

Indeed, I am your true and loving father, but this fact will not help you in your quest. A claim that your mother was a noblewoman should sway the council in the favor of your petition. King Ubreckt already suspects Nadiah's affair with me, and you must HURRY my child. I must leave this kingdom now for my own safety as well as to save Nadiah's honor.

Never forget me, my child.

For weeks our people were living in terror. No one felt safe, and bodies were being found too often. Males, females, elderly, children...none were safe.

The fiends came from the shadows during the great lunar alignment. Soundless even to the ears of our Rangers, slowly they came. They fed - perhaps one or two citizens a night. Those horrid beasts multiplied and stole away a dozen or so each evening. Our numbers of pure furres were becoming dangerously low. King Alidiphus declared that the vampires were to be slaughtered.

He called together Atas' finest troops and sent them forth, into the night. He bade me to go with them, and I did with much foreboding. We made our way into the ruined temple of the great Dragon, Mother/Father to the primes. At the dawn of morn the moons hung low in the sky, and the sun threatened to overtake the darkness of the night. Nothing could be heard from within. It is a rare day that a furre sees a Cositan Elite Guard pale in fear, yet on that dark silent morning all but one of the troops were rigid with terror. That stone-faced furre was Darnalt. Head of the Royal Guard to King Alidiphus, Darnalt had a wife as beautiful as the great Prime Danival. A sweet and innocent lady who loved her husband as much as he loved her. He woke one morning to find himself lying beside her cold body. She was one of the first taken by the vampires. Were that not enough, the young lass was soon to bring their first child into this world. Darnalt lost both his wife and child and many say he was dead from his grief, though his heart still beat. What better than an unfeeling warrior to resist an unfeeling foe?

The carnage started when Darnalt screamed the battle cry. Our troops swarmed into the caves, surprising the hoard of vampires. Blood spewed forth from fighters on both sides. I stayed back and watched the gruesome confrontation in horror. Darnalt's expression was the most terrifying thing in the ruins that pre-dawn day. There was a demented joy shining brightly in his eyes, his lips turned up into a malicious grin. He fought like a beast gone mad, felling foul vampires with every swing.

Yet, everyone knows that a beast that succumbs to primal madness often falls. And so too did Darnalt. No one saw how it happened, but he was found at the end of the battle with his own sword through his heart. His face shone with the peace he had found. His paw clutched a scrap of hair, presumably his poor dead wife's.

We were triumphant, but at a heavy cost. Over three fourths of our fighters were dead. We carried them all back for proper burial. The vampire corpses were burned. That very night King Alidiphus declared all vampires outlaws, and ordered them removed from the Kingdom or slaughtered... Whichever was easiest.

I myself documented most of what I encountered...but after this night I will speak of it nevermore. The memory is too terrible.

.....
Intro Instrumental
.....

"What do I do now?" said the pageboy to the Guard,
"I have spent my whole life waiting, defending Bar'Akah,
And now you say this loyal towne has fallen and is lost,
The King of evil Perennay has seized the furres and crops.

Then the Guard said "Oh my poor boy, we must put them to the sword,
For the Queen in all her mercy will find a just reward.
For the noblefurres and merchants, and Knights of ready paw
Who will be the Queen's crusaders, send word both near and far.

Oh Bar'Akah is lost,
Oh Bar'Akah is lost,
Oh Bar'Akah is lost."

"Tell me what to do," said the Queen upon her throne,
"But speak to me in whispers, for we are not alone,
They tell me now that Bar'Akah has fallen to the hand
Of some bedeviled southern menace who has seized the loyal land."

Then the counselor said "Lady, we must call upon our foes
Sodore, Badlands, La'Vonte to end our bitter wars.
All 'Cositans must be as one and gather for the fight,
You will be their leader, begin the Battle cry,

Oh Bar'Akah is lost,
Oh Bar'Akah is lost,
Oh Bar'Akah is lost."

Ooh, high on a hill, in the town of Bar'Akah,
There stood Synistrad, the King of the Perennay,
Whoring and drinking and snoring and singing, around him his army lay,
Secure in the knowledge that he had won the day.

A messenger came, blood on his feet and a wound in his chest,
"Atas'Cosita's coming!" he said, "I have seen their flag in the west!"
In a rage Synistrad struck him down with his knife,
And he said, "I know that this furre lies,
They quarrel too much, and Allcroft could never unite!

I am invincible, I am the King,
I am invincible, and I will win..."

Closer they came, the army of good Lady Faxifor,
Marching by day and night, they knew what they quested for.
And when the crusaders came over the mountains, saw ravaged Bar'Akah
They fell to their knees and prayed to Primes afar.

They started the battle at dawn, taking the city by storm,
With guardsmen and good knights and harsh cries of war,
They poured through the city walls.
The traitors were flying and screaming and dying,
And the Faxifor swords were strong,
And Synistrad fled when he heard their victory song;

"We are invincible, freedom of kin,
We are invincible and we will win!"

"What do I do now?" said the Wise furre to the Fool.
"I have spent my whole life searching, to find the Golden Rule,
Though centuries have disappeared, the memory still remains,
Of those enemies together, could it be that way again?"

And the Fool said, "Oh you Wise men, you really make me laugh,
With your talk of vast persuasion, and searching through the past.
There is only greed and evil in the furres who fight today,
The song of the crusader has long since gone away,

Oh Bar'Akah is lost,
Oh Bar'Akah is lost,
Oh Bar'Akah is lost...

Bar'Akah."
